Cloud Application Protection and Security
The use of cloud applications for business-critical services such as email, file sharing, storage, CRM, HCM and other functions provides enterprises with new areas of efficiencies and cost savings. With adoption of cloud applications, users gain flexibility, reliability and accessibility not available within a traditional framework. This growing trend also presents enterprises with new security issues.
While cloud application providers are responsible for the security of their application, enterprises are leaving critical data in the hands of a third party, therefore facing new potential vulnerabilities. Organizations have to rely almost completely on the cloud application provider to ensure that data privacy, residency, and security issues are addressed. Whether a provider hosts its application in a private cloud or with a public cloud service, such as Amazon Web Services, enterprises must take their own steps to:
- Ensure cloud data compliance and data residency
- Protect against unauthorized data access and theft
Securing Data While Using Cloud Applications
New solutions have emerged for improving data security while utilizing cloud applications, including the implementation of a cloud encryption gateway. The gateway can serve as a proxy “entry” to a cloud application, replacing sensitive data with encrypted or tokenized values for transmission and storage in the cloud.
To the end user, the cloud application appears as normal, as long as access to the application is through the PerspecSys server. If a user tries to access restricted information through a direct connection to cloud application (i.e., not through PerspecSys), only unreadable data will be seen. Also, secure reverse proxy servers can be configured within an IaaS partner’s infrastructure or outside an organization’s firewall in a DMZ to support remote access. The PerspecSys Cloud Protection Gateway offers this flexibility to ensure cloud data security, whether the cloud applications are being accessed by internal workers or by mobile/remote members of an organization.
